As a church, we have been privileged to have had Peter as our pastor since his arrival at the beginning of January 2008.

Peter did not “let the grass grow under his feet” but, immediately on arrival in Cyprus with Pauline, his wife, he set to work in the church.  There were around thirty members in the church at that time but, by May 2010 church membership had increased to sixty-four.  On Sundays, our congregation now averages ninety-six worshippers.

Being a man who is predominantly interested in his “flock,” Peter’s priority on arrival was to acquaint himself with his congregation and for the first month of his tenure, he spent much time visiting members and, where necessary, ministering to needs – emotional as well as spiritual.

His constant reminder was towards unity in the body, with Psalm 133 being a key scriptural support.  In this connection, he helped promote the work of the recently-formed Paphos Area Churches Together (PACT).

During Peter’s tenure he worked tirelessly towards formulating a statement of faith, a constitution, further development of the diaconate and an eldership.  His enthusiasm and love for the Word of God was a constant reminder to the church that there is a world around us which needs to know God’s love and the saving power of the Lord Jesus to all who come to Him in faith.  He would frequently remind people, on greeting or taking leave of them, “Remember Jesus loves you … very much.”

Working with Peter in a pastoral role has been one of the highlights of my Christian walk.  He was generous in praise … and always “walked the second mile” with those to whom others might have shown less favour.  His style of leadership was that of servant-hood – modeling the basin and towel principle as Jesus washed His disciples’ feet on the eve of His crucifixion.

It would be remiss of me if I did not mention Pauline, Peter’s wife.  Pauline has been a solid rock for Peter in his work, not living in his shadow but a quiet support by his side.  Her contribution towards the worship has been much appreciated and her skill on the keyboard was a joy to behold.  I recall occasions when Peter and I were unsure as to a particular course of action and Pauline would gently come to the rescue with a pearl of God-given wisdom.

Peter and Pauline will be missed by us all but we rejoice in the fact that they will be visiting Cyprus regularly.  We wish them both a long and

enjoyable retirement together.  On Sunday, 30th May, 2010, the church formally released them into retirement, as we welcomed our new pastor, Geoff Hill and his wife, Sylvia, who have been wonderful friends to the church for over two years.

To Peter and Pauline – remember, “Jesus loves you … very much” (and so do we).
